Plated style Limited Slip Differential’s (LSD) are used commonly in racing and rallying. This is because they are more effective at transmitting a set percentage of the torque to the spinning wheel. The diff allows one wheel to drive while the others off the ground. Their design uses a pack of clutch plates worked by sun and planetary gears to transmit a set percentage of the torque to the spinning wheel (between 40 and 50%). These units are very effective in increasing traction, consequently we recommend the Cusco diff over the Quaife ATB diff. The Cusco unit is able to be adjusted from 1-way to 1.5-way. The 1-way LSD setting is specially suited for the front wheel drive application of the Mini and activates under acceleration. It acts as a true LSD when the throttle is off improving overall lap times. The 1.5 LSD setting is more aggressive while under acceleration. By adding one of these to your BMW Mini Cooper S/JCW/GP you will see track times tumble as significantly more power is transmitted to the ground.
